Classes begin with a group discussion exploring the challenges of ageing populations, whose responsibility it is to look after older people when the time comes and how perceptions vary on this internationally. Students would then be asked to work in groups to come up with ways to tackle some of the ethical challenges associated with EOL (end of life) care – looking for example at how we might balance the cost of increasingly sophisticated treatments with the value of a short life extension for a very elderly person? Each students would practice presenting their views on this complex issue to their group, and the morning session would culminate in a mini debate on the subject of Euthanasia, with the added twist that students would be encouraged to pick a viewpoint opposite to the one they expressed earlier and defend it. 

 

Afternoons will be devoted to workshops and activities  and will include opportunities for socialising with British students,  a muddy outdoors team-building experience, a Q & A with an Oxford student about life at the university, a fun interactive session on British culture and etiquette, an interview workshop, punting on the Cherwell, and the Oxford Challenge, a team-based treasure hunt around the historic city.

 

The evening programme offers a combination of light-hearted holiday fun including karaoke sessions and talent shows, and inspirational talks and debate nights. On the penultimate evening of the course students will dress in their best for Formal Hall, the centuries-old formal meal that Oxford University students are required to take part in every fortnight.
